Photos by Callum. And folks, please have some respect this week. if you're going to take his photos and post them on other websites, at least give him or this website credit in your post. That's all we ask.
As mentioned last week, this was the game many of us expected to lose badly. So it was surprising to see the Dogs within a couple of goals half-way through the last quarter. As it turned out, half a dozen shocking and almost comical errors in defence saw Sturt kick instant goals and pull away. Here's a few examples off the top of my head: Ryan Williams's two short kick-outs from full-back straight to Sturt players - leading to instant goals. They were were bad enough (and Williams must be wondering whether he'll be dropped as he had made other defensive blunders earlier in the game that cost goals), but then Switala did the same thing soon after. And then there was Earl Shaw's similiar clanger with a wayward handpass in defence.
Bloody hell - it was probably the largest number of clangers I've ever seen in a game of footy. I'd be worried if Sturt had blown us away with great football, but we blew ourselves away with silly mistakes. Sturt look to be a good side this year, but they're not up to Bulldog standard - we just need to get our act together.
Yes - the umpiring was poor (nay stupid!), but it didn't really favour either side.
The Dogs will be fuming after this performance. I pity the team that comes up against Centrals next week. They'll be in for one hell of a belting. Wait a sec, let me check the fixtures... poor Norwood.
Stats:
Sturt has now won 2 games in a row at their home ground against Centrals. The last time they did that was 1977 - 1978!
Oh, and let me share with you Callum's tale of woe. He made the mistake of purchasing a steak sandwich at Unley Oval. The texture of the meat was so tough and gristly that he had to throw it away and buy a hotdog instead. You expect a bit of gristle in a steak sandwich, but this was apparently beyond a joke. Who ever heard of a steak sandwich that was so bad it had to be "binned"? I heard their sausages were nice though.
Callum managed to source this diagram from the Sturt FC catering department:
